The Truth About Salt

Not All Salt is Created Equal and Here's Why

Salt is a mineral that is imperative for human health and life. Our bodies can operate thanks to a high concentration of nutrients, including the essential minerals found in real natural salt. Trace minerals you may find in sea salt include bromine, boron, phosphorus, zinc, silicon, iron, manganese, and copper. Natural salt (mined or evaporated from the ocean or salt lakes) contains no additives; it comes purely from nature.

Table salt (man-made) the chemically produced salt found in most processed foods, including processed meat, cookies, chips, crackers, canned soups, bread, pastries, and roasted nuts has NO trace minerals, is often bleached and can have anticaking agents and contaminants like aluminum.

To truly drive the point home when a fish is transferred from natural saltwater to saltwater made with table salt: it dies.

Some studies and medical professionals will tell us that salt causes hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, yet this is not accurate. If they are talking about table salt, then yes- it does. But not natural salt.

So what’s the answer? Well I stumbled onto this in Page, Arizona about 4 years ago. Todd and I had gone to the Lower Antelope Valley Canyon for a tour and when we finished we stopped in at a restaurant to have an early dinner. On a side note, Lower Antelope Valley Canyon is a must see and do.

After we finished our meal and went to the register to pay I noticed these small salt containers for sale. I asked the waitress about it. She told me it was the best salt your body could have. It was all natural and mined right there in Utah. Well, I bought some and set it aside when I got home. You see, we have been using Himalayan salt for many years. We tossed Morton’s salt to the curb long ago. Himalyan salt I was told was a healthier option and it is for the most part however I noticed that the last batch I purchased was made in China!!

I was insulted, in shock and angry. So I went looking for my small container of Redmond’s Real Salt and I’ve been hooked ever since. Not that all Himalyan salt is made in China, however the pure true Himalayan salt comes from Pakistan. Hard to come by here in the states.

The other salt that is natural and good is Celtic Salt. Celtic salt tends to be more of a gray color and is full of minerals-calcium, copper, zinc, iron, potassium, active enzymes and micronutrients. Another great option.

Real Salt, Celtic, and Himalayan are all unrefined sea salt with very similar mineral content. Here’s the differences:

  • Celtic salt comes from evaporated ocean water along the coast of France.
  • Himalayan salt comes from any of dozens of salt mines in Pakistan.
  • Real Salt is harvested from an ancient underground salt deposit in Utah.

Now- these salts have flavor and they are saltier so you don’t need as much in your food.

Hydrating first thing in the morning with salt is the best perk up you can have. Adding ½ a teaspoon to a glass of water is good. Todd and I will place a little bit of salt on a spoon and eat it, then drink a glass of water. It does wonders for your body.

Adding salt to your water will improve it’s absorbency drastically. By changing the chemical composition of the water with salt, the body will recognize it as something with more nutritional value and therefore absorb it more efficiently than plain water.

That’s been my experience, anytime I find out something new, exciting and healthier than what I’ve been doing, I first share with Todd, poor guy, then friends and family. I share and you decide.

All I can tell you is that my journey for living a better healthier life daily has taken me down some interesting roads. I’m not opposed to trying new things, I just want to stay healthy and continue to have adventures with Todd.
