Health & Well-Being
You have two solid choices when buying honey; Manuka or local
Let me explain as there’s different reasons for both.
Local honey is pretty awesome for allergies. But it must be locally harvested. Picture this, you get allergy tested because you can’t handle the itchy eyes, watery eyes, dripping nose, etc. they discover 90% of what you’re reacting to is….local. Olive trees, pine needles and so on.
So the doctor wants to start allergy shots, 2x’s a week to start for maybe 6 months, then throttle you down to once a week for…ready?….forever!! The doctor has no end date, as “it depends”. That used to be my favorite answer when I worked in technology. And real estate. Will that guarantee that data download? Well, it depends on other factors. Do you think they’ll accept my low ball offer? It depends on how desperate they are.
Then the doctor will tell you(only if you ask questions) that the allergy shot will be composed of the top items you are allergic to that are pollinating in the area. This is to build up your immunity to them.
The other option is to purchase locally grown honey that the bees have visited and pollinated and take 1 -2 teaspoons a day and that does the same thing for most people. Benefits are, taste good, cheaper, don’t have to drive back and forth and pay for office visits.
Manuka honey is the BEST!
Manuka honey is produced by bees that have foraged on the flowers of Leptospermum trees, native to Australia and New Zealand. While New Zealand has just one variety of Leptospermum, Leptospermum scoparium, Australia is home to over 80 species of Leptospermum. Manuka honey has great health properties and it’s a creamier texture with a rich flavor.
The strength of manuka honey is measured by its antibacterial activity. There are 3 common measures used:
The higher the number for each measure, the higher the antibacterial action.
When choosing Manuka honey, a UMF of 10+ is believed to have therapeutic benefits.
A pro-tip is to always check for the UMF trademark and certification on the label to ensure authenticity.
Higher MGO ratings are generally recommended for medicinal purposes, while lower ratings are suitable for everyday use and maintaining overall well-being.
Depending on your specific needs and preferences, if you’re looking for a mild taste and general health benefits, a lower MGO rating like 100+ will suffice.
However, if you’re seeking potent antibacterial properties, higher ratings like 400+ or 800+ are recommended.
I have both in my pantry and enjoy Manuka with my yogurt or tea.
And when seasonal allergies hit, the local grown is my choice.
It’s important to know what’s going into our bodies, to do the best we can to stay out of doctor’s offices with the things of this earth God has given us.
And a few fun facts I just found out about:
HONEY Did You Know ?
There are live enzymes in honey.
When in contact with a metal spoon, these enzymes die.
The best way to eat honey is with a wooden or plastic spoon.
Honey contains a substance that helps your brain work better.
Honey is one of the rare foods on Earth that alone can sustain human life.
One teaspoon of honey is enough to sustain human life for 24 hours.
Propolis, produced by bees, is one of the most powerful natural antibiotics.
Honey has no expiration date.
A bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1,000 flowers, and produces less than a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
Deep gratitude to the humble BEE!
