Health & Well-Being
Self-Care or Health-Care?
Several years ago, Todd and I attended a Health and Well-Being Seminar in Austin Texas. One saying that has always stuck with us that we learned there was, “Self-Care or Health-Care?” You’ll be paying either way so which course is better for you in the long run?
I seem to always be in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle and as such, I spend a lot of time researching natural things I can do to boost overall immunity and health. Over the recent months, I have found so much information in regard to the tremendous health benefits of both Ginger as well as Cayene Pepper. With the colder months on the horizon and the threat of colds, sinus infections, and flus looming large, this is the perfect time to start a new routine and perfect a recipe, so I embarked on the journey of creating a potent immunity booster—ginger shots.
For me, the essence lies in natural and homegrown remedies that yield the best results. If it's something I can cultivate or harvest, count me in. While I've purchased ginger shots from local markets, juiceries, and even bulk stores like Costco, a glance at the ingredients list spurred the realization that creating these health elixirs at home is not as challenging as it seems.
Experimenting with different recipes, I initially concocted a ginger, lemon, and cayenne pepper blend. However, this was met with a lukewarm reception from Todd, who occasionally battles acid reflux. Undeterred, I refined my recipe, resulting in a concoction that has become a household favorite and is gearing up for a second batch.
Here's the winning recipe:
At first, I utilized my blender as I didn’t have a juicer at the time. I combined all the ingredients, ensuring a thorough mix. To preserve essential nutrients, it's crucial to extract all the juice from the pulp. A simple strainer did the trick. I’ve since picked up a juicer and it has dramatically sped up this process as well as made the process so much easier.
I poured the liquid into ice trays and froze for a convenient, refreshing boost and stored the remainder in the refrigerator. Each morning, I’ll take a couple of the ice cubes out and place them in small juice glasses for Todd and I and let them sit for a ½ hour or so. Once defrosted, down the hatch they go.
What makes this homemade ginger shot a powerhouse is its combination of immune-boosting ingredients. Pineapple brings a burst of tropical flavor along with vitamin C, while lime and lemon contribute additional vitamin C and antioxidants. Celery adds a refreshing crispness, and cayenne pepper not only provides a spicy kick but also boasts anti-inflammatory properties. The secret weapon, Manuka Honey, brings its antibacterial and antiviral prowess to the mix.
As winter approaches, taking proactive steps toward maintaining a robust immune system is paramount. With a DIY ginger shot like this, not only do you control what goes into your elixir, but you also savor the satisfaction of cultivating your health from the roots up.
Embrace the season with a glass of this invigorating blend, and let the natural goodness fortify your defenses. Cheers to health, one homemade ginger shot at a time!
